The Outreach to Kenya mission was founded by Emily Dudgeon after her conversion to Christianity on an ocean voyage from
England to Mombasa. As her missionary work developed, it involved taking the Bible's gospel message to teachers and pupils
in Kenyan schools. In the 1970's she was joined by Pastor Joseph Luvisia Jadevela, a Kenyan Christian who had been trained
both as a pastor and as a school teacher.
Just before her tragic death in 1978, Emily was also joined by an English couple, Robin and Mary Bough, who faithfully
continued the mission's work with Joseph. The Boughs then went back to England, where they continue to support Joseph's
important work within the Kenyan West Province.
Since then, Joseph's work has expanded to include hospital visits to minister to AIDS patients. The current epidemic is
continually claiming thousands of lives and, although the bodily needs of its sufferers are great, Joseph asserts that their
spiritual needs are far greater.
To that end, he is now taking the gospel's message into as many hospitals as possible. He has also recently been invited to go
into a number of prisons where the inmates have similar bodily and spiritual needs.
The loss of the mission's accommodation (in a fire during 1999) was a serious setback, and the mission aims to complete a
replacement building, complete with latrines and a garage for the mission's mini-bus. The garage is a necessity, rather than
a luxury, as a lot of vehicles left in the open get stolen! They can't afford to risk their transportation when visiting the
crop-growing plot during preparation, planting, and harvesting times.
In addition to his own five children, Joseph and his wife, Jenny, have legally adopted around twenty girls, rescuing them
from very troubled situations. Still, they would both like to help even more abused people, giving them the love and security
of a truly Christian home.
All of this, of course, needs money to continue and grow.
The care of the younger girls, and the daily running of the Western Province home, is entrusted to senior Kenyan ladies
(Joyce, Emily, Flora, Josephine, Edith and Eliza).
In the UK, Robin and Mary Bough are trustees and administrators, along with Mark Buff. Robin and Mark control the UK funds
which are sent to Kenya through a UK bank account in the name of Outreach To Kenya.
